A Breakthrough in Milling and Surface Demolition of Highway Tunnel Vaults

Jocker is a registered patent by Laurini and the most innovative machine in milling and surface demolition of highway tunnel vaults. Highway tunnel maintenance is an increasingly pressing need, particularly the milling of the concrete surface of the vault. Until now, this operation has always been carried out with milling cutters mounted on excavator arms, specifically modified for this type of work. However, the excavator arm can only mill half of the vault and then has to turn 180° to work on the other half. These operations require a high level of operator specialization, as they need to coordinate the movements of the arm by controlling various hydraulic cylinders. This results in a complex and stressful task for the operator, taking considerable time. Positioned at the center of the roadway, with a telescopic arm carrying a milling cutter mounted on a slewing ring, Jocker traverses the entire arch of the vault without interruption and with an automatic system that perfectly follows its geometry. The forward movement is initiated with a button, and the operator only needs to monitor the process until the pass is completed, at which point they will command the return in the opposite direction. This results in significant time savings, higher hourly production in cubic meters removed, and less strain on the operator, who can oversee operations from a safe position away from the work zone. The Jocker was entirely designed by Laurini engineers, who sought to find the ideal solution for milling the entire arch in a single pass without interruptions. The most challenging aspect was calculating the rotational force on the arm, considering the distance, the weight of the arm and the cutter, and the force itself during milling. This required the application of six gear motors that engage on the same slewing ring. The undercarriage is hydraulically expandable to allow for compact transport and, at the same time, a very wide support base during operation, providing the machine with the necessary stability. A much more powerful engine than those typically used in this work was applied, allowing for the use of a dedicated hydraulic pump with high flow and hydraulic oil pressure.
